What we are doing in class

Autumn Term 2017

Dear Parents

I hope you all had a great summer holiday with your children and that they feel ready to come back to school.

Our topic this term is Animals including humans which will build on the work they did on animals last year. The first half term the topic is mainly geography based as we are learning about animals from different continents and in doing so the children will learn about continents and countries. In the second half term the topic will be mainly science based and the children will do experiments and learn about their senses.

Literacy work which includes speaking and listening, reading and writing will be linked to the topic as much as possible. The children will learn one text really well and this will encourage their writing. They will discuss and act out parts of stories before writing. They will have experience of writing in a variety of genre including narrative, information texts, recounts, instructions and poetry.

Numeracy work will include number and place value, addition and subtraction, money, measures and shape, number and fractions, doubling and halving and data. In most lessons the children will do some practical work before their written work.

In PSHE the unit we will be following will be New Beginnings followed by a unit on Getting On and Falling Out. We will start the year in R.E. with a unit on Creationism. Music lessons will be linked to the topic to begin with and we will then follow the Essex music curriculum on Charanga their online scheme.

The children will have one lesson of gym a week, one lesson of ball skills and one lesson of dance. Please could they keep their kit in school and take it home for washing during the half term holiday.

I am really keen that all the children earn Reading ribbons this term so could you please make sure your child reads at home at least 4 times a week. This will really improve their reading.

Summer 2017

Dear Parents,

I hope you and your child had a great Easter break. This term our topic is Living things and we will be concentrating on plants before half term and animals after half term. Work on plants will include looking at different seeds and methods of dispersal, growing bulbs without soil and looking at different conditions needed for their healthy growth. The animal part of the topic is on habitats and will include learning about food chains.

I shall link literacy work to the topic as much as possible. We will look at some poetry, learn to write information texts and choose a book to learn and to work from in detail.

In numeracy the children will be studying units on number and place value, mental addition and subtraction, problem solving, reasoning and algebra, measurement, mental multiplication and division and fractions.

In Art with Mrs Pretty the children will be concentrating on clay work, painting and close observational drawing. In Music we will learn songs from the Charanga website as well as continuing with recorders. In PHSE the topic will be Relationships and after half term it will be Change. The R.E. topic is Pentecost until half term and then the Lord’s Prayer after half term. In ICT the children will be learning coding, saving and retrieving work and adding pictures to texts.

P.E. lessons will be gym on Tuesday afternoon, dance on Thursday morning and games on Friday morning. We will also be practising for the Scatterball tournament that takes place on June 30th.

It would be great if all the children could gain their gold Reading ribbon this term so please try and hear your child read as least 4 times a week.

If you have any questions or concerns please come and speak to me.

Spring 2017

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a great Christmas and best wishes for 2017.

This term our topic will be Fire. It will be mainly a history based topic with some science work. The children will learn all about the Great Fire of London, where and how it started and how it spread so rapidly. They will also do some map work looking at maps of London. The science work will be about materials and will build on the work on materials that they did in Year 1.

I will try and link the literacy work to the topic as much as possible. We will be continuing with Talk Write where the children learn a text orally before writing their own. They will start the term with a short poetry unit before learning how to write a recount of the Fire of London. The fiction work will be based around dragons and we will read a lot of books about dragons before they write their own stories.

In Numeracy the children will study units on number and place value, addition and subtraction, problem solving and reasoning, measurement, properties of shapes, position and direction, multiplication and division and fractions.

In music lessons the children will follow a unit which includes learning London’s Burning. The PHSE unit is Going for goals and the R.E units are Jesus the Storyteller and Special Ways of Living. In I.C.T. the children will look at online simulation games and learn to send e-mails to their friends.

The children will have their weekly art lesson with Mrs. Pretty and for Design and Technology we will do some cooking. As usual they will have a gym lesson, a games lesson and a dance lesson each week.

Please encourage your child to read at least 4 times a week to gain reading ribbons. This past term nearly all the children in the class gained a gold ribbon.

Please speak to me if you have any further questions about the curriculum.
