Phonics

At All Saints we use Read, Write Inc as our synthetic phonics scheme. Like all phonics schemes it teaches the children the sounds in English, the letters that represents them, and how to form the letters when writing. We send the children home with Book Bag Books that include the sounds that they are currently learning, and some tricky words (also known as common exception words). Because of the fun, pacy nature of lessons, our children quickly develop in confidence.

Our teachers are ably assisted by Fred. Fred is a toy frog and he can only say the sounds in a word. The children must then blend the words so that Fred can read them. We call this Fred Talk and it demonstrates how the sessions are fun and interactive.

We teach our phonics in small groups and assess every half term. The groups are therefore fluid and this means that we can work intensively with children that are in danger of not making the progress that they should.
